Standing Rock Sioux Tribe questions agenda for ICWA summit

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is questioning the agenda for a long-awaited Indian Child Welfare Act summit in South Dakota.

After a lengthy delay, the Bureau of Indian Affairs scheduled the summit for May 15-16 in Rapid City. But the tribe says the agency won't be tackling the issues they have raised with regard to the state's compliance with ICWA.

The South Dakota Indian Child Welfare Act Coalition, which represents all of the tribal ICWA directors in the state, released a report to Congress that confirmed that Indian children are overrepresented in the foster care system. Most Indian children are placed in non-Indian homes, the report said.
