Secretary Jewell to testify at Senate Indian Affairs Committee

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell will testify before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on Wednesday, May 15.

Jewell took over the Interior Department on April 12. She comes from Washington, the home state of Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Washington), who is the first woman to chair the committee.

The appearance before the committee will be Jewell's first since being confirmed by the Senate on April 10. There are no earlier hearings on her schedule, according to DOI's Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs.

Jewell's predecessor, Ken Salazar, also made his first appearance as secretary before the committee. And so did Gale Norton, who served during the first term of former president George W. Bush.

Norton's successor, Dirk Kempthorne, did not appear before the committee until March 2007, nine months into his term as secretary.
