Navajo woman crowned Miss Indian World at annual powwow

Kansas Begaye, a member of the Navajo Nation, was crowned Miss Indian World at the 30th annual Gathering of Nations powwow.

Begaye, 24, competed against 16 other young Native women. She excelled in tribal knowledge, dancing ability, public speaking and personality to capture the top prize.

"I cried. I really did cry when I got the crown," Begaye told the Associated Press.

The powwow took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, over the weekend.
