Navajo Nation approves extension for coal-fired power plant

The Navajo Nation has approved a lease extension for a coal-fired power plant on the Arizona portion of the reservation.

The lease for the Navajo Generating Station is due to expire on December 22, 2019. The Navajo Nation Council approved an extension with a number of conditions, including a $1 million signing bonus and a Navajo preference policy, the Associated Press reported.

Navajo President Ben Shelly signed the bill that approved the extension into law on Tuesday. The tribe expects to see annual payments grow from $3 million to $43 million a year.
