READING I generally read for learning and inspiration and not so much for recreation. “The River of Doubt,” by Candice Millard, is all about Teddy Roosevelt’s trip down a tributary of the Amazon River. His commitment to conservation is certainly something that resonates deeply with me. I think he really got that the crown jewels of the U.K. might be actual jewels, but the crown jewels of the United States rested in the diversity and spectacular nature of our public lands.

WATCHING I have a very hard time sitting still watching a movie or watching TV. I prefer getting out into nature. And you have a relationship with people that is different when you connect in a natural setting. When I met Denis McDonough, the chief of staff for President Obama, we actually did three laps around the Rose Garden instead of sitting in an office. It was a nicer way for us to get to know each other. There will be more meetings at Interior that are outside instead of inside, if I have anything to do with it.
