Indian student in Alabama denied diploma over eagle feather

A member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Alabama has been fined $1,000 and denied her diploma because she wore an eagle feather to graduation ceremonies.

Chelsey Ramer's diploma is being held until she pays the fine to Escambia Academy, a private school. About 20 percent of the student body is Indian, Native News Network reported.

“I don't feel it was right. The eagle feather was not a disruption," Jaime Ramer, Chelsey's father, told Native News Network.

The school board is meeting tonight to discuss the issue.
