Bad River Band loses bid to block exploratory work for mine

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources won't stop exploratory drilling work at a controversial mine site near the reservation of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

The tribe complained that it wasn't consulted or notified of the work at the Gogebic Taconite mine. The site is within the tribe's treaty ceded territory.

The state said the company complied with all requirements for work at the $1.5 billion iron ore mine site.
