Federal authorities charged Montana Sen. Shannon Augare (D), who also serves as a council member for the Blackfeet Nation, with drunken driving, obstructing a peace officer and reckless driving.

Augare was seen driving erratically on the reservation and was stopped by a county sheriff. He disputed the jurisdiction of the sheriff and drove away, according to documents in federal court.

The tribe looked into the matter and referred the case to the U.S. Attorney in Montana. Augare was charged under the Assimilated Crimes Act, which allows federal prosecutors to charge people for violating crimes in state law.
