BIA employee a finalist for award for crime-fighting efforts

Charles Addington

Charles Addington, a member of the Cherokee Nation, is a finalist for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal.

As an employee for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Addington developed and implemented a plan that reduced violent crime on four reservations by 35 percent. He drew from his experience as a police officer in Indian Country.

“This has never been done in Indian country before,” Darren Cruzan, the director of BIA’s Office of Justice Services, said in a profile for Addington. “Lots of people were involved, but Charlie was the mastermind.”

The winners of the medal will be announced on October 3.
