Oliver Red Cloud, chief of Oglala Sioux Tribe, passes away at 93

Oliver Red Cloud, a traditional chief of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, died on Thursday after fighting a long illness. He was 93.

Red Cloud's Lakota name was Hitun Kasan Ska Mata. He was a fourth-generation descendent of Red Cloud, an Oglala Lakota chief who signed the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty.

Oliver Red Cloud was born on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He was the Pine Ridge Agency delegate to and also served as chief of the eight Sioux tribes in South Dakota.

Red Cloud was a leading statesman between the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapahoe people of the Dakota territory, according to terms under the Fort Laramie Treaty. He was a powerful orator about the obligations each nation had to the other in keeping peace during modern times.

Red Cloud also served as chairman of the Black Hills Sioux Nation Treaty Council.
