Taos Pueblo to pay tribute to Richard Nixon at annual powwow

Taos Pueblo in New Mexico will honor the late former president Richard Nixon at its annual powwow this weekend.

Nixon signed a bill that returned 48,000 acres to the tribe in 1970. The land included Blue Lake, one of the tribe's most sacred sites.

"I can only say that in signing the bill I trust that this will mark one of those periods in American history where, after a very, very long time, and at times a very sad history of injustice, that we started on a new road--a new road which leads us to justice in the treatment of those who were the first Americans, of our working together for the better nation that we want this great and good country of ours to become," Nixon said at the signing of the bill on December 15, 1970.

The honoring ceremony takes place on Friday, on the opening night of the Taos Pueblo Powwow. Nixon’s younger brother, Ed Nixon, will accept the honor and give some remarks.
