Actor Johnny Depp is blaming bad reviews for the poor performance of The Lone Ranger at the box office.

The film has only made $86 million since opening for the July 4 weekend, Variety reports. It cost more than twice that amount to make it.

“I think the reviews were written seven to eight months before we released the film,” Depp told Yahoo Movies UK.

Depp drew criticism for playing Tonto and reviewers said the film was filled with stereotypes.
