Outgoing treasurer of Pequot Tribe expected to plead guilty

Steven Thomas resigned as treasurer of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut today and is expected to plead guilty in a theft case.

Thomas, 39, was charged with three counts but is expected to plead guilty to one count of theft from an Indian tribal government receiving federal funds, The New London Day reports. His plea deal calls for no prison time, the paper said.

"We are grateful for his hard work and dedication since assuming his position on Council and wish Steven and his family the best in his future endeavors," the tribe said in a statement quoted by the Day. "The Tribe does not plan to make any additional comments regarding this matter at this time."

Thomas is the brother of Michael Thomas, a former chairman of the tribe who was found guilty of stealing $100,000 the tribe. Michael Thomas is due to be sentenced October 22, the Day reported.
