The Interior Board of Indian Appeals will hear challenges to a land consolidation plan for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California. The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's consolidation area and acquisition plan in June. Opponents -- including Santa Barbara County and community groups -- believe the designation will lead to approval of a controversial land-into-trust application. The application covers a 1,400-acre site that the tribe plans to use for housing and other purposes. The property falls under the 11,500-acre land consolidation area.
