Supervisors in Santa Barbara County, California, voted 4-1 to oppose a land-into-trust application submitted by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. The tribe's application for a 1,400-acre site has drawn significant controversy. Officials say they are concerned about the loss of property taxes and the plan to use part of the land for housing. The county previously voted to challenge the Bureau of Indian Affairs for approving the tribe's land consolidation plan. Chairman Vincent Armenta announced the withdrawal of the plan before the supervisors took their vote on Tuesday. The BIA is taking comments on an environmental assessment for the application.
