Navajo Nation Council passes measure to update energy policy

The Navajo Nation Council voted 13-6 on Tuesday to pass the Navajo Nation Energy Policy of 2013.

The policy replaces one that was developed back in 1980. It will guide the tribe as its develops and maintains its natural resources.

“It is our hope that the energy policy will remain a working document as we begin to further define the process for dealing with energy related projects and programs,” Council Speaker Johnny Naize wrote in a report to accompany the bill, according to a press release.

President Ben Shelly welcomed passage of the policy. He has 10 days to sign or veto it.
