Passamaquoddy Tribe finds contamination in local water supply

The Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point in Maine is looking for a new water supply as tests confirm contamination in some wells.

E. coli was found in one well and high levels of coliform were found in others. That indicates the water is unsafe to drink.

The reservation is supplied by the Passamaquoddy Water District. The tribe has been unhappy with the service and is looking for a new source, The Bangor Daily News reported.

Leaders in the town of Perry, however, are trying to prevent the tribe from conducting "large scale groundwater extraction activities," the paper reported. Some of the tests apparently disrupted the water supply and non-Indians complained.
