Charles Youvella, a young member of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, died on Monday after sustaining a head injury during a football game.

Youvella was a senior at a high school on the reservation. His team was competing in the first round of the Division V playoffs on Saturday when he was tackled.

Youvella kept on playing but collapsed on the field. It was later determined that he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss, of Charles Youvella, a senior at Hopi High School. Charles loved football and was a wide receiver," the Arizona Interscholastic Association said in a press release.

Youvella’s father, Wallace, is the first Hopi to serve on AIA's executive board.
