President Obama promises visit to Indian Country next year

President Barack Obama didn't make any major policy announcements at the White House Tribal Nations Conference on Wednesday but said he will visit Indian Country sometime in 2014.

Obama didn't provide any details of his planned trip. But it will be his first to Indian Country since he took office in January 2009.

"I saw the beauty of Crow Agency, Montana, when I was a candidate for this office," Obama told tribal leaders. "Next year, I’ll make my first trip to Indian Country as president."

Obama visited the Crow Nation in 2008, when he was adopted by a prominent tribal family. His adoptive parents, Hartford Black Eagle and Mary Black Eagle, attended his historic inauguration in 2009 and the White House Tribal Nations Conference in 2011.

Hartford Black Eagle passed away in November 2012 at the age of 78.
