Oneida Nation leader in spotlight for campaign against mascot

Ray Halbritter, the official representative of the Oneida Nation of New York, is making headlines as part of the Change the Mascot campaign.

Indian activists have been battling racist images in sports for decades. But in a just a few short weeks since the start of the football season, Halbritter has managed to attract national and international attention -- even President Barack Obama talked about it.

“People say there are more important issues,” Halbritter tells The Washington Post, “but there are no more important issues than your self-image.”

The attention hasn't come without a price. Conservative publications have questioned Halbritter's ancestry and some members of his own tribe aren't happy with his leadership methods.

“He used me as an example to show any Oneidas who stand up against him that he will attack any aspect of your life,” Danielle Shenandoah, who is Halbritter's cousin, told the paper.
