Lexie Wakan LaMere, Winnebago activist, passes at age 21

Lexie Wakan LaMere, 1992-2014

Lexie Wakan LaMere, a Democratic activist and member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, died on Friday after a battle with leukemia. She was 21.

LaMere never missed a Democratic National Convention, attending with her father, well-known activist Frank LaMere, since her birth in 1992. At the most recent convention in 2012, she served as a delegate.

“I sincerely believe that she would have gone on to serve in national government as a congressman or a senator. She had the personality, the ability,” Dakota County Democrats Chairman Delmer Adam told The Sioux City Journal. “She had the whole package: She was sharp, well spoken, knowledgeable on any subject.”

LaMere was laid to rest on the reservation on Monday.
