Navajo Nation Council to consider bill to remove speaker

The Navajo Nation Council meets for its winter session on Monday and a bill to remove Speaker Johnny Naize from office will be on the agenda.

Naize is charged with 10 counts of bribery and one count of conspiracy in tribal court. Delegate Alton Joe Shepherd filed a bill to remove him from the position.

"This legislation is basically preserving the image, the integrity that the chair brings to this council," Shepherd said at a committee meeting yesterday, The Farmington Daily-Times reported.

Naize has refused calls to step down while his case proceeds.
