Federal Recognition

Town doesn't support recognition for Brothertown Nation

The Brothertown Indian Nation of Wisconsin isn't seeing much local support for restoration of its federal recognition.

The town board in Brothertown approved a resolution that said it wouldn't support the tribe's efforts. The decision has upset the tribe, whose government has been in place in Wisconsin since the late 1800s.

In September 2012, the Bureau of Indian Affairs said the tribe's recognition was terminated by Congress in 1839. That means only Congress can restore the tribe's status.
