Kewa Pueblo student sings Keres for national Coca-Cola ad

YouTube: Coca-Cola - It's Beautiful in Keres

A teenager from Kewa Pueblo in New Mexico was featured in a Coca-Cola ad that aired during the SuperBowl on Sunday.

Christy Bird, 16, sang a few lines from "America the Beautiful" in the Keres language. She relied on her elders for an accurate translation of the iconic song.

"I'm representing America," Bird said in a video that accompanied the ad. "I'm representing my home."

The video stirred controversy as it aired. Some viewers criticized the use of "foreign" languages even though Keres is an indigenous language spoken by a handful of tribes in New Mexico.

Nearly 5 million people have viewed the It's Beautiful ad on YouTube as of today. Bird can be seen in the first 10 seconds.
