The Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories apologized for their role in the residential school scandal in Canada.

The schools were created by the government and administered by churches. The majority of them in Canada and Alberta were run by Catholic groups.

"Those who attended the residential schools often had to leave home at a young age. We recognize that there were students who benefited from the experience and education they received at these schools," the bishops said in a statement.

The bishops are urging churchgoers to participate in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission during an upcoming visit to Edmonton, Alberta, from March 27-30.
