Nez Perce Tribe defends Yellowstone bison hunting practices

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho has a treaty right to hunt bison from Yellowstone National Park, Chairman Silas Whitman said.

Whitman fired back at James St. Goddard, a Blackfeet Nation man took a bison heart to the state Capitol to protest the way the Nez Perce are carrying out their hunt in Montana.

"We will not bend to our enemies,” Whitman told The Helena Independent. “He said the hunt sets us back 150 years. For him to come down and say the governor should take action, that sets us back even more.”

Whitman hopes to meet with Gov. Steve Bullock (D) to discuss hunting issues.
