Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes sue over water rights

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana filed suit in federal court to stop the adjudication of personal water rights cases on the reservation.

The 1855 Treaty of Hellgate promises water on and off the Flathead Reservation for the tribe. But since the state has failed to ratify a controversial compact, the tribe is seeking to preserve its rights from being affected by decisions in the state court system.

The tribe warned of costly and lengthy litigation when the compact failed last year.
