Navajo leaders ask Arizona to cancel licenses for liquor stores

Members and leaders of the Navajo Nation are trying to shut down three liquor establishments in Arizona.

Gary McDonald, a non-Indian who is being held in jail on methamphetamine charges, operates three stores within the boundaries of the otherwise dry reservation. But since they are on fee land, the tribe lacks jurisdiction.

"We want this to be a clean community," Lorenzo Curley, a Navajo Nation Council delegate, told 12 News. "They will not do that as long as we have the nuisance created by this establishment."

Leaders off the reservation also support the effort to deny liquor licenses for the stores.
