The Bureau of Indian Affairs is planning to make a decision on the leadership of the Cayuga Nation of New York.

Eastern Region Director Franklin Keel asked Clint Halftown, the tribe's current leader, and the Unity Council to submit information regarding their dispute. Responses are due June 15, according to a letter posted by The Auburn Citizen.

The BIA previously recognized the Unity Council as the legitimate tribal governing body. But the Interior Board of Indian Appeals said the agency overstepped its bounds so Keel is following up on that ruling by seeking more information.

Meanwhile, another state judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Halftown against the Unity Council. Acting State Supreme Court Justice for Cayuga County Thomas Leone said he lacked authority to determine who is in charge of the tribe.
