Bills introduced to recognize Montaukett Nation in New York

The Montaukett Indian Nation would immediately gain recognition from the state of New York under legislation introduced earlier this month.

The tribe lost its status through a state court ruling in 1910. A09704 and S07619 would "correct this impropriety," the language states.

During the last legislative session, lawmakers passed a bill to set up a recognition process and clear a path for tribe. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) vetoed it.
