Navajo Nation hosts signing ceremony for trust fund settlement





Leaders of the Navajo Nation will hold a signing ceremony for a $554 million trust fund settlement today.

President Ben Shelly and LoRenzo Bates, the Speaker Pro Tem of the Navajo Nation Council will accept the settlement on behalf of the tribe. The Obama administration will need to sign off before it becomes final.

The tribe sued the Interior Department in 2006 for mismanagement of its trust funds and trust assets. The settlement is the largest single tribal payout so far.

Including the Navajo Nation, the Obama administration has reached settlements with 73 tribes.
