The Comanche Nation of Oklahoma is working to preserve its language for future generations.

Ten years ago, the tribe counted fewer than 100 speakers. Billie Cable-Kreger, a language instructor, said the number has dropped dramatically.

“I don’t want the language to die,” Cable-Kreger, who teaches at a day care program established by the Comanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee, told The Oklahoman.

Cable-Kreger learned the language from her mother but she doesn't consider herself fluent. She's hoping younger tribal members carry on the tradition.
