The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is working with officials in Minnesota to address an outbreak of foodborne illnesses.

About two dozen people on the reservation have become sickened and two people have been sent to the hospital. Initial reports indicate contamination from the E. coli bacteria.

"If you have leftovers from any recent community event, health officials recommend that you discard them," the tribe said on its website. "If you are experiencing symptoms, our medical staff recommends that you contact your health care provider or local emergency room."

Chuck Walt, the executive director of tribal programs, said food from a powwow earlier this month and recent outdoor events could be the cause of the outbreak. But officials said the reservation cases are not linked to a statewide outbreak of E. coli.
