Voters of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township in Maine elected three brothers to the council on Wednesday.

Billy Nicholas won the chief's spot and his brother, Leslie, was elected vice chief. The third brother, Alex, won a seat on the council.

Billy Nicholas served as chief from 2006 to 2010. He was ousted in 2010 but received an unusual severance payment of $40,436, The Portland Press Herald reported last moth.

One of Nicholas’ main rivals for the position was Allen Sockabasin. He was abruptly removed from the ballot on the night before the primary due to an old conviction that may have not even been valid, the paper reported.
