Former treasurer of Pequot Tribe seeks no prison time for theft

Steven Thomas, a former treasurer of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut, faces sentencing next week on theft charges.

Thomas admitted that he took $177,603 when he worked for the natural resources department. But he says he shouldn't be given prison time, saying he has repaid the debt to the tribe and to society, the Associated Press reported.

Thomas faces 12 to 18 months in prison. He's due to be sentenced February 26.

Thomas's brother, former chairman Michael Thomas, also was found guilty of stealing from the tribe. He was sentenced to 18 months but is appealing.
