Senate Indian Affairs Committee sets business meeting & hearing

UPDATE: H.R.841 has been removed from the agenda. And the business meeting will not be webcast, the committee said.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a business meeting and a hearing on Wednesday.

Four bills are on the business meeting agenda. They are:
H.R.841, to amend the Grand Ronde Reservation Act to make technical corrections.
S.161, the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians Restoration Act. The bill extends federal recognition to the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Montana.
S.1074, the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act. The bill extends federal recognition to six Virginia tribes.
S.1219, the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Mission Indians Water Rights Settlement Act. The bill settles the water rights of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians in California.

The meeting will be immediately followed by a hearing on five bills. They are:
S. 1474, the Alaska Safe Families and Villages Act . The bill encourages the state of Alaska to enter into agreements with tribes regarding law enforcement. More significantly, it repeals Section 910, Special Rule for the State of Alaska from S.47, the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, so Alaska tribes can exercise jurisdiction over non-Indian domestic violence offenders
S. 1570, the Indian Health Service Advance Appropriations Act. The bill amends the Indian Health Care Improvement Act to authorize forward funding for the Indian Health Service.
S.1574, the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Consolidation Act. The bill amends the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Demonstration Act, commonly known as Public Law 477, to consolidate employment, training and related funding from various federal agencies.
S.1622, the Alyce Spotted Bear and Walter Soboleff Commission on Native Children Act. The bill creates a national commission to study issues affecting American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian youth.
S.2160, the Native American Children's Safety Act. The bill requires background checks of adults in tribal foster homes.
