Indian arts organization surprised by departure of top executive

The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts said it was open to talks with its former chief operating officer but neither side appears to be saying what led to the break.

John Torres-Nez, a member of the Navajo Nation, resigned on March 30. His departure was "a complete shock," SWAIA said.

"John made this decision," the organization said on Facebook. "He was not forced or coerced into resignation by anyone. The board was notified on March 30th and John posted his open letter on his personal Facebook page on March 31st. the board reached out to him, but to no avail."

A number of Indian artists have called for Torres-Nez and SWAIA to try and repair their relationship in advance of the upcoming Santa Fe Indian Market. The highly popular event takes place August 18-24.
