Mescalero Apache Tribe seeks Congressional bill for land swap

The Mescalero Apache Tribe of New Mexico is pursuing a land swap through an act of Congress.

The tribe wants to acquire 400 acres within Lincoln National Forest. The land is currently being used for Ski Apache, a tribal venture.

"The reason we are trying to acquire this land is that the tribe over the last 50 years since we purchase Ski Apache has invested millions of dollars in improvements to the property, and by expanding and making additional improvements, we can anticipate higher revenues for the tribe," President Danny Breuninger said in a letter to tribal members, The Ruidoso News reported.

Breuninger met with New Mexico's Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., to discuss the swap.
