The Assembly of First Nations will hold an election to choose a new national chief in the wake of the resignation of Shawn Atleo.

AFN leaders will meet at the end of the month to decide on the date for an election. They also will determine a formal position on the First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act, the bill that led Atleo to resign.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Stephen Harper put a hold on the bill. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt said the administration will wait to hear the position of Native leaders before moving forward.
