Disenrolled members of Berry Creek Rancheria fight indictment

Two dozen people who have been charged for a protest at the Berry Creek Rancheria in California are seeking to have the indictment dismissed.

The 24 were charged with felony vandalism, which carries prison time, in a dispute at tribal headquarters. Butte County prosecutors offered a deal for all the defendants to plead guilty to a misdemeanor but some have refused because they believe it will affect their disenrollment appeals.

Of the 24 who were charged, 17 were members of the Tyme Maidu Tribe at the time of the May 16, 2013, protest. Four have since been removed from the rolls.
