Hospital reports Native family for using traditional treatments

Two Row Times: Ojibwe child refuses chemo, wants traditional medicine instead

The McMaster Children’s Hospital in Ontario has called child protective services on a Native family whose daughter has been relying on traditional medicine.

The 11-year-old girl has been undergoing chemotherapy for a unique form of leukemia. Due to adverse side effects, she asked her parents to stop the treatments so she can receive Ongwehowe Onongwatri:yo: from a traditional healer on the Six Nations Reserve.

The hospital, however, said the girl is at risk and reported the family to the Children’s Aid Society. The agency now plans to meet with the New Credit First Nation to determine what to do next.
