The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island is seeking to acquire surplus U.S. Navy properties.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is requesting the properties on behalf of the tribe, The Providence Journal reported. The properties are located on Aquidneck Island, which is part of Narragansett territory.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar bars the tribe from participating in the land-into-trust process. But since the Navy properties are already in federal hands, transferring them to the BIA might not be an issue.
