Former Washington player calls for team to drop racist name

Champ Bailey, who was a first-round draft pick for the Washington NFL team in 1999, says it's time for the franchise to eliminate its racist mascot.

Bailey said the team doesn't appear to be listening to Native Americans who are offended by the use of a racial slur. He told USA Today that owner Dan Snyder is "making it worse" by refusing to change.

“When you hear a Native American say that ‘Redskins’ is degrading, it’s almost like the N-word for a black person,” Bailey told USA Today. “If they feel that way, then it’s not right. They are part of this country. It’s degrading to a certain race. Does it make sense to have the name?”

Bailey now plays for the New Orleans Saints.
