The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma continues work on a power plant on the Arkansas River.

In 1986, Congress authorized the tribe to build the plant. Since 2009, the tribe has received $2.5 million in grants from various federal agencies to study and prepare for the facility.

The tribe is seeking additional funds from the Interior Department. The money would be used for additional studies.

The facility would be located at the W.D. Mayo Lock and Dam. Revenues from power could bring $10 million to $15 million to the tribe a year, a tribal council member said.
