The South Dakota State Historical Society is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the start of filming for Dances With Wolves.

The award-winning film was shot primarily in the state. It featured Lakota language dialogue that was translated by the late Albert White Hat of Sinte Gleska University, a tribal college on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation.

A slew of Native actors and extras starred in the production. The cast included Graham Greene, Rodney Grant, Floyd 'Red Crow' Westerman, Tantoo Cardinal, according to IMDB.

Dances With Wolves was released in 1990. Kevin Coster, who directed, produced and starred in the film, is being invited to a 25th anniversary event next year, the State Historical Society said.
