The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan is warning people about high levels of bacteria in certain parts of the Chippewa River.

On July 29, the tribe recorded extremely high levels of E. coli in two portions of the river, one near a local park and another near a golf facility . The same two locations showed equally high levels when results were averaged over the past 30 days.

You definitely don’t want to ingest the water or go in with an open wound,” Carey Pauquette, the tribe's water specialist, told Central Michigan Life.

Pauquette said the source of the contamination is unclear. The tribe is working with the state to address the situation.
