Joe Pakootas, a former chairman of the Colville Tribes, won the Democratic nomination for Washington’s 5th Congressional District.

Pakootas secured 29 percent of the vote, more than any other candidate. He will now face Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington), who won her party's nomination, in the November general election.

Rodgers is part of the Republican leadership team on Capitol Hill. However, she doesn't have much of a record on Indian issues except for her opposition to an off-reservation casino for the Spokane Tribe.

Washington's 5th includes the eastern portion of the Colville Reservation, the Spokane Reservation and the Kalispel Reservation. Native Americans make up only 2 percent of the population in the district.
