A federal judge ordered civil commitment for a man accused of murdering three people on the Crow Reservation in Montana.

Sheldon Bernard Chase, 25, is accused of murdering his grandmother, his cousin and his cousin's boyfriend in October 2011. He never went to trial because he was found mentally incompetent.

Efforts to forcefully medicate Chase failed while he was being held at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Missouri, the Associated Press reported. He now faces civil commitment in Montana or North Dakota but could remain in the federal system if those states refuse to accept him, the AP said.

Federal authorities say Chase killed Gloria Sarah Goes Ahead Cummins, 80; 21-year-old Levon Driftwood; and 20-year-old Ruben Jefferson, on October 4, 2011. He allegedly used a gun that he took from his mother's home on Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.
