Members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana can expect a second round of offers under the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations, The Char-Koosta News reports. Some $8.3 million went out earlier this month to 2,100 owners. The offers covered mineral as well as land interests. The deadline to accept is October 24. Carolee Wenderoth, who works for the tribe's land title records office, said the second wave will come sometime after that. The $3.4 billion Cobell settlement provided $1.9 billion for Indian landowners who want to sell their fractionated interests. DOI will pay "fair market value" as required by the Indian Land Consolidation Act. Since the program started last winter, DOI has successfully concluded more than $115 million in transactions. Nearly 270,000 acres have been returned to tribes. Get the Story:
