The Ute Tribe of Utah is prosecuting a former council member for rape and sex offenses, The Deseret News reports.

Richard Jenks Jr., 58, appeared in tribal court on Thursday on charges of rape, deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful sexual intercourse and sexual assault. Details were scarce because the tribe's court and prosecutor's office are closed on Fridays, the paper said.

Jenks was first elected to the council in 2003. His most recent term ended in 2013, the paper said.
